New exam reforms

LIBERAL arts (文科) or science? This is the choice we all have to make in high school. However, some students in Shanghai and Zhejiang dont have to worry any more. The current Senior 1 students in these two areas have been chosen to pilot (试点) the national college entrance exams reform (改革), according to a reform plan announced by the government on Sept 4.?The students no longer have to choose between liberal arts and science. Required subjects will also be cut down to only three – Chinese, Mathematics, and Foreign Languages, namely English, with a mark out of 150 for each. Students can take Foreign Language tests twice and choose the best scores to include in their totals.Apart from these, students have to be tested in six other subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Political Science, and History. A final test will be offered after they finish studying each subject. The results will be classified (分类) by letter grades.

When applying for universities, they will be able to choose three to hand in based on the major they are applying for and their strengths.?The reform will help develop students overall (全面的) ability in high school, commented CRI. Also, the reform of the English tests will be good news for students.

We needn’t worry if anything goes wrong in the first test because we have a second chance to do better,” said Liu Jiao, a Senior 1 student in Shaanxi province. The reform will expand all over China in three years, according to the plan. There are also some overall changes that will affect (影响) all of you.

Starting in 2015, more regions will have to use the same papers for each subject. The policy (政策) that awards bonus points (附加分) to students who excel in sports and arts will be canceled.

Independent enrollments (自主招生) in universities will also be moved after the exams, according to the plan. The enrollment system will also see some changes to give more students the chance to go to college, especially students in rural areas. And enrollment rates in all regions will be kept no lower than 4 percentage points below the national average.By doing so, a new testing and enrollment system will be applied all over China in 2020 for fairness, said Liu Limin, vice-minister of the ministry.Changes to the current college entrance exams are inevitable (不可避免的), the Beijing Times commented. What everyone can do now is study hard and get prepared.
