American astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man ever to set foot on the moon, has died at the age of 82, his family said on Saturday.

"We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures," the family said in a statement. It did not say where he died.

Armstrong was said to undergo a heart-bypass surgery earlier this month to relieve blocked coronary arteries.

Describing the iconic space explorer as "a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job," the statement said "He served his nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot and astronaut."

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969 and has been best remembered by saying "That 's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind."

Armstrong and his fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin spent two and a half hours walking on the moon, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs, while astronaut Michael Collins remained in orbit in the command module.

U.S. President Barack Obama lamented the death of Armstrong, calling him a man "among the greatest of American heroes -- not just of his time, but of all time."

"When Neil stepped foot on the surface of the moon for the first time, he delivered a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten," the president said in a statement.

NASA administrator Charles Bolden also praised Armstrong, saying he will be remembered for "taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own."

"As we enter this next era of space exploration, we do so standing on the shoulders of Neil Armstrong," he said in a statement.

Some houses are designed to be smart. Others have smart designs. An example of the second type of house won an Award of Excellence from the American Institute of Architects.

Located on the shore of Sullivans Island off the coast of South Carolina, the award-winning cube-shaped beach house was built to replace one smashed to pieces by Hurricane (飓风) Hugo 10 years ago. In September 1989, Hugo struck South Carolina, killing 18 people and damaging or destroying 36,000 homes in the state.

Before Hugo, many new houses built along South Carolinas shoreline were poorly constructed, and enforcement of building codes wasnt strict, according to architect Ray Huff, who created the cleverly-designed beach house. In Hugos wake, all new shoreline houses are required to meet stricter, better-enforced codes. The new beach house on Sullivan’s Island should be able to withstand a Category 3 hurricane with peak winds of 179 to 209 kilometers per hour.

At first sight, the house on Sullivans Island looks anything but hurricane-proof. Its redwood shell makes it resemble a large party lantern (灯笼) at night, according to one observer. But looks can be deceiving. The houses wooden frame is reinforced with long steel rods to give it extra strength.

To further protect the house from hurricane damage, Huff raised it 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilingslong, slender columns of wood anchored deep in the sand. Pilings might appear insecure, but they are strong enough to support the weight of the house. They also elevate the house above storm surges. The pilings allow the surges to run under the house instead of running into it. “These swells of water come ashore at tremendous speeds and cause most of the damage done to beach-front buildings,” said Huff.

Huff designed the timber pilings to be partially concealed by the houses ground-to-roof shell. The shell masks the pilings so that the house doesnt look like its standing with its pant legs pulled up, said Huff. In the event of a storm surge, the shell should break apart and let the waves rush under the house, the architect explained.

  36. After the tragedy caused by Hurricane Hugo, new houses built along South Carolinas shore line are required ________.

  A) to be easily reinforced

  38. Huff raised the house 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings in order to ________.

  A) withstand peak winds of about 200 km/hr

  B) anchor stronger pilings deep in the sand

  C) break huge sea waves into smaller ones

  D) prevent water from rushing into the house

  39. The main function of the shell is ________.

  A) to strengthen the pilings of the house

  B) to give the house a better appearance

Some houses are designed to be smartOthers have smart designssmart的意思很多,如巧妙的,聪明的,漂亮的,潇洒的,敏捷的。

十年前的那场飓风造成了18人死亡,破坏或摧毁36000座房屋(killing 18 people and damaging or destroying 36,000 homes)。

看过房子的人说它在晚上就像一个大灯笼(it resemble a large party lantern at night),而实际上,房屋的木质结构已经被钢管加强了(long steel rods to give it extra strength.)。

2.7raised it 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings)。 木桩都非常坚固,足以支持房屋重量(strong enough to support the weight);而木桩提供的空间可以使海水从屋底流过,避免流入屋内(pilings allow the surges to run under the house instead of running into it)

Huff在木桩外面设计了一圈护板(the timber pilings to be partially concealed by the houses ground-to-roof shell),这主要是出于视觉美观的考虑(so that the house doesnt look like its standing with its pant legs pulled up)。 不会,在遇到海水冲击时,围板会很容易破碎,从而让海水从屋底流过(the shell should break apart and let the waves rush under the house)。

  36. C

In Hugos wake, all new shoreline houses are required to meet stricter, better-enforced codes,意思是在飓风警醒下,新建的房子都必须要满足更为严格的规定。

Before Hugo, many new houses built along South Carolinas shoreline were poorly constructed。

  37. A

(Huff raised it 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings),和第六段的围板(the houses ground-to-roof shell)。

The pilings allow the surges to run under the house instead of running into it。

Huff designed the timber pilings to be partially concealed by the houses ground-to-roof shell,这里介绍的应该是围板的功能:遮住部分木桩。 第二句用Huff的话交代了目的:the house doesnt look like its standing with its pant legs pulled up,使房子不至于看起来像是光着腿——这应该是出于美观的考虑。

the shell should break apart这句话讲到围板在海水冲击下会碎掉,但是不是很容易碎掉没有说明。后面还有一句and let the waves rush under the house,意思是围板碎掉是为了使海浪从屋底冲过。
